New Delhi, Jan 5: US President Donald Trump has once again raised the prospect of annexing Greenland, prompting a sharp criticism from Denmark, whose prime minister urged him to “stop the threats” over the Arctic Island.

The BBC reported that speaking to reporters, Trump said the United States “needs Greenland from the standpoint of national security,” repeating arguments he has made in the past about the island’s strategic location and mineral wealth. Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected the suggestion outright, saying it made “absolutely no sense” to talk about a US takeover and stressing that Washington had “no right to annex” any part of the Danish kingdom. She underlined that both Denmark and Greenland are NATO members and already cooperate closely with the US on defence. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also dismissed Trump’s remarks, saying “that’s enough now” and describing the idea of US control over Greenland as a “fantasy”. The latest exchange followed a social media post by Katie Miller, wife of Trump aide Stephen Miller, depicting Greenland in the colours of the US flag with the word “soon”, which drew criticism in Denmark and Greenland.
