YEAR 2025: Police report major gains in counter-terror, crime control in Poonch

Poonch, Dec 31: District Police Poonch recorded significant operational gains in 2025 across counter-terrorism, narcotics control, crime disposal and public outreach, with four terrorists neutralised, multiple hideouts busted and improved crime disposal rates, according to the annual performance report released by SSP Shafket Hussain on Wednesday.

According to the year-end report, SSP Poonch while addressing a press conference, said the intelligence-led operations, close coordination with sister security agencies and active public cooperation helped strengthen security and maintain law and order across the district.

On the counter-terrorism front, SSP said that two police-generated intelligence-based operations, along with five JAKLI-led operations, resulted in the neutralisation of four Pakistani terrorists during the year.

Six terrorist hideouts were busted, marking an increase from four in 2024, while large quantities of arms, ammunition, grenades, UBGLs, mortar shells and IEDs were recovered.

The number of Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) rose sharply to 4,192 in 2025 from 1,122 the previous year. Seven cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) were registered, and eight properties worth Rs 1.04 crore were attached to curb terror financing. Preventive action against terror networks also saw a significant rise, with 176 such actions taken.

SSP also said that operational capabilities were further strengthened with the establishment of new Special Operations Group (SOG) camps and the strengthening of Border Police Posts (BPPs), enhancing response and area domination in sensitive zones.

In the fight against narcotics and organised crime, NDPS cases increased from 26 in 2024 to 41 in 2025, with 57 arrests made.

Five PIT-NDPS cases were invoked, 16 bank accounts were frozen and drug-linked properties worth rupees 1.40 crore were attached.

Drug awareness initiatives also saw a sharp increase, from 86 programmes in 2024 to 331 in 2025, including outreach in forward villages across the fence.

Action against illegal activities was intensified during the year, with police seizing over 300 vehicles involved in illegal mining, compared to 74 in 2024, and imposing fines exceeding Rs 37 lakh, SSP further said.

In cases of bovine smuggling, 161 cases were registered and 669 bovines were rescued.

On the crime front, he stated that the total number of cases registered rose to 1,579, which police attributed to improved public confidence.

Case disposal improved from 62.44 per cent to 75.15 per cent following the strict implementation of new criminal laws, while 45 absconders were apprehended during focused drives.

District Police Poonch also undertook extensive civic action and public outreach, conducting 30 Civic Action Programme (CAP) activities in border and remote areas, SSP Poonch Shafket Hussain further informed.

Under Operation Sindoor, police evacuated 17,698 civilians from shelling-affected areas and safely disposed of 197 live artillery shells.

Awareness programmes on new criminal laws increased from 12 to 265, reaching over 10,000 citizens, including residents of forward villages across the fence. The police said that the achievements of 2025 reflect decisive operational success and institutional strengthening.

District Police Poonch reaffirmed its commitment to sustained professionalism, public partnership and coordinated action to ensure a safe, secure, drug-free, terror-free and crime-controlled district.
