Mendhar, Jan 05: A rusted mortar shell was found in a forward village near the Line of Control (LoC) on Monday in Poonch district and was subsequently destroyed in a controlled explosion, officials said.

The mortar shell was noticed lying in an open field by villagers of Upper Ghani in Balnoi area of Mankote sector around 11.15 am, officials said.

They said a police team immediately secured the area and Army experts later destroyed the shell in a controlled explosion without causing any damage.

Srinagar, Jan 04: A soldier of the Army’s Chinar Corps died on Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest at a camp in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said here.

Naik Pargat Singh died at the 19 Rashtriya Rifles Camp at Larkipora in Anantnag district, they said.

Singh hails from Amritsar in Punjab and joined the Army in 2015.

The Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Army condoled the death of the soldier.

“Chinar Corps deeply grieves the untimely demise of our Braveheart, Naik Pargat Singh, in Anantnag district. Chinar Warriors express deepest condolences and stand in solidarity with the bereaved family,” the Chinar Corps said in a post on X.

Baramulla, Jan 04: Joint security forces on late Saturday evening busted a terrorist hideout in the Suchliwaran forest area of north Kashmir, police said.

A top police officer confirmed that the joint search operation was launched on based on specific and credible information security forces was Baramulla. During the operation, a hideout was detected and subsequently searched thoroughly.

A cache of arms, ammunition and other materials was recovered from the hideout, which was later destroyed on the spot, the officer added.

Security agencies have initiated further investigation to ascertain the ownership and intended use of the recovered materials. the officer added. —(KNC)

Jammu, Jan 02: Police and the National Security Guard (NSG) on Friday conducted a joint anti-fidayeen and anti-hostage mock drill at police stations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district to enhance preparedness against terror-related contingencies, officials said.

The exercise was conducted under the supervision of Kathua SSP Mohita Sharma at police stations in Hiranagar and Rajbagh, they said.

The mock drill was carried out jointly by the Special Operations Group (SOG) Kathua, police personnel and NSG commandos, the officials said.

During the exercise, the NSG component briefed and demonstrated tactics for neutralising terrorists during a fidayeen attack, procedures for the safe rescue of hostages in crisis situations and methods for defusing improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

After the culmination of the drill, NSG officers conducted a detailed debriefing of the police and SOG teams, they said.

The mock drill aimed at enhancing operational preparedness, agility and response capabilities of police personnel to deal with any potential fidayeen attack or hostage-like situation targeting police establishments, the officials said.

Police personnel were also briefed on the tactical use of dominating heights, deployment of heavy firepower and the functioning of alarm systems installed at police establishments.

They were directed to remain in a constant state of alertness, fully equipped with arms and ammunition, to ensure swift engagement of any hostile threat, officials added.

Srinagar, Jan 02: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday appointed senior IPS officer Mukesh Singh as the Director General of Police (DGP), Ladakh, with immediate effect.

According to an order issued by the MHA, Mukesh Singh, an AGMUT cadre officer of the 1996 batch has been posted as DGP, Ladakh on repatriation from Central deputation, until further orders.

Srinagar, Jan 02: Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted a district-wide verification drive to check the use of unauthorized Virtual Private Network (VPN) services in Shopian, during which 15 individuals were identified.

According to the statement, the drive was carried out in strict compliance with the prevailing prohibitory orders in force, aimed at restricting the use of unauthorized VPNs to prevent the misuse of digital and encrypted platforms that could pose potential risks to public safety and security.

Following detailed technical scrutiny and background verification, no terror-related links or adverse antecedents were found and no FIR has been registered in the matter. However, as a preventive measure, security proceedings were initiated against 10 individuals, primarily belonging to the younger age group, for violation of the said orders. They were strictly warned to refrain from using unauthorized VPN services in the future.

The statement reads that out of the 15 individuals identified, 05 were minors who were counselled and advised in the presence of their guardians, with emphasis on awareness, lawful digital conduct, and the consequences of violating lawful orders.

J&K Police reiterated their commitment to enforcing lawful directives, preventing the misuse of online platforms, and ensuring public safety and cyber security across the district, the statement reads.

Srinagar, Jan 02: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday carried out searches in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian and Pulwama districts as part of its probe into the November 10 blast near the Red Fort in Delhi, officials said.

They said the NIA sleuths, assisted by police and CRPF, brought along one of the accused — Yasir Ahmad Dar — to the searches. Ahmad was arrested in connection with the “white collar” terror module.

The officials said the searches were going on in the Padpawan area of Shopian and the Pampore locality of Pulwama, both in south Kashmir.

The searches were carried out at the instance of Dar, the ninth accused in the case, who had told the investigators about some hideouts in these areas, the officials said, adding that further details were awaited.

Jammu, Jan 01: Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat Thursday emphasised the preparedness for contingencies and quick response to any emergent situation.

Calling for bolstering layered security with effective use of technology to enhance situational awareness, he directed for plug vulnerabilities with seamless coordination between Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, ITBP and other stakeholders.

DGP issued these instructions while conducting a comprehensive security review of key religious and heritage sites in Jammu, including Raghunath Mandir, Bahu Fort and Tirupati Balaji Mandir.

Inspector General of Police, Jammu zone, Bhim Sen Tuti and Inspector General of Police, CRPF Jammu sector, R Gopala Krishna Rao accompanied the DGP.

While reviewing the security, DGP Prabhat laid emphasis on strengthening layered security, improving crowd management mechanisms and ensuring effective use of technology to enhance situational awareness.

The visiting officers interacted with personnel deployed on ground and issued necessary directions to further tighten security arrangements, plug vulnerabilities and ensure seamless coordination between Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, ITBP and other stakeholders.

Special focus was laid on preparedness for contingencies and quick response to any emergent situation.

The joint security review, according to officials, was aimed at ensuring a safe and secure environment for devotees and visitors, while maintaining public confidence and readiness.

The DGP reiterated the commitment of all security agencies to uphold peace and security in the region through proactive planning and regular assessments.

Banihal, Jan 01: District Police Ramban, in close coordination with the Army, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), central intelligence agencies and various wings of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, successfully maintained peace and a secure environment across the district during 2025 through comprehensive security and law enforcement measures.

Addressing a press conference at the District Police Headquarters Ramban, SSP Ramban Arun Gupta, along with other senior officers, presented the Annual Performance Review–2025. He said preventive policing, intelligence-led operations, effective field supervision and sustained community outreach remained the core focus areas throughout the year.

Detailing action against anti-national elements, the SSP informed that one released militant was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Continuous surveillance was maintained on surrendered militants, Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and their associates. Properties measuring 41 kanals and 14 marlas of Jammu and Kashmir Nationals operating from Pakistan , worth approximately ₹1.52 crore, were attached, while preventive action was initiated against 84 OGWs.

Regarding action against illegal immigrants, SSP Gupta said 32 illegal foreign nationals of Rohingya and Bangladeshi origin were identified for verification and deportation. In this connection, FIR No. 77/2025 was registered at Police Station Chanderkote.

On hotel regulation compliance, he said FIR No. 65/2025 was registered against Hotel Pine Heritage, Patnitop, for non-submission of Form-C. In addition, sensitisation programmes were organised for hoteliers and NGOs to ensure adherence to legal norms.

The SSP further said that the registration of over two dozen vehicles involved in bovine smuggling was suspended. He added that more than 300 people were rescued by the police and its allied wings during flood situations in July and August 2025.

He noted that Ramban district remained peaceful and incident-free throughout the year. To strengthen police-public relations, 15 Peace Committees were constituted, while 462 Police Community Partnership Group (PCPG) meetings and 172 Thana Diwas interactions were conducted.

Elaborate security arrangements were put in place for the smooth and peaceful conduct of major events, including Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations, the 38-day-long Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra–2025, local religious yatras, winter carnivals at Sanasar and Patnitop, multiple VVIP movements, and Operation Sindhoor deployments. Security audits of NH-44, hydel power projects and rail infrastructure were also carried out.

Reviewing crime statistics, SSP Gupta said that a total of 789 cases were registered during 2025, reflecting sustained and proactive efforts by District Police Ramban to uphold law and order and ensure public safety.

Mendhar/Poonch, Jan 01: The army on Thursday recovered a consignment suspected to have been dropped by a drone along the Indo-Pakistan border in Poonch district, officials said.

The dropping took place in an area between Rangar Nallah and the Poonch River in the Chakkan da Bagh belt of Khari village early in the morning, they said.

The army found a bag carrying dozens of ammunition rounds and a yellow tiffin box suspected to be an improvised explosive device (IED), they said.

The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) examined the bag first to check for an explosive threat.
