China is projected to generate the most yearly greenhouse gas emissions from wearable healthcare electronics in 2050, followed by India. The analysis is published in the journal Nature.

The environmental footprint is estimated alongside ecotoxicity and e-waste issues posed by the devices. A kilogram of carbon dioxide equivalent is a unit measuring the climate impact of greenhouse gases emitted by comparing their potential for warming to that of carbon dioxide.

Researchers from the US’ Cornell and Chicago universities estimated that a wearable healthcare device could be emitting up to six kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent during its entire lifetime, from raw material extraction through manufacturing to disposal.

The researchers also showed that the use of recyclable or biodegradable plastics offers only marginal benefits, whereas substituting critical-metal conductors and optimising circuit architectures can significantly reduce impacts without compromising performance.

The team’s engineering-based framework of assessing a device’s footprint during its lifecycle “holds promise for establishing (an) ecologically responsible innovation in next-generation wearable electronics.”

The researchers conducted a ‘life cycle assessment’ of four devices they said represented wearable electronics in digital healthcare — a non-invasive continuous glucose monitor, a continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor, a blood pressure monitor (BPM) and a point-of-care ultrasound patch.

The devices were selected for the analysis based on clinical relevance, diversity of sensing modalities and coverage across the technology readiness spectrum.

“(A) cradle-to-grave analysis of representative wearable healthcare electronics (glucose, cardiac and blood pressure monitors and diagnostic imagers) generates full-spectrum environmental impact metrics, identifying warming impacts of 1.1-6.1 (kilograms carbon dioxide)-equivalent per device,” the authors wrote.

“The global device consumption is projected to increase 42-fold by 2050, approaching two billion units annually and generating 3.4 (metric tonnes of carbon dioxide) – equivalent emissions alongside ecotoxicity and e-waste issues,” they said.

By 2050, non-invasive continuous glucose monitors could surpass current global smartphone sales, estimated at 1.2 billion units in 2024, the team said.

They added that the market share is initially dominated by continuous ECG and blood pressure monitors, but by 2050, continuous glucose monitors dominate (72 per cent), followed by continuous ECG (19 per cent) and blood pressure monitors (eight per cent).

Perplexity has also stepped up its India push by offering its Pro plan, which costs $200 a year globally, free for one year to customers of Airtel.

The company said the plan gives users unlimited access to its most advanced research tools. Following the offer, India now accounts for more than one-third of Perplexity’s global daily active users, up from just 7 per cent last year.

User engagement data suggests ChatGPT currently leads in India. In November, about 46 per cent of its monthly users opened the app daily, compared with 20 per cent for Perplexity and 14 per cent for Gemini.

The ministry emphasised about the safety of the world’s largest biometric identity system.

“Aadhaar is the world’s largest biometric identity system with approximately 134 crores live Aadhaar holders,” the ministry said.

“It has completed more than 16,000 crore authentication transactions,” it added.

Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada said Aadhaar continues to remain secure due to strong technological and institutional safeguards put in place by the government.

Aadhaar, issued by UIDAI, has around 134 crore live Aadhaar number holders. Since its launch, the system has processed more than 16,000 crore authentication transactions, making it the largest biometric identity programme in the world.

The minister said UIDAI follows a multi-layered security framework based on the “defence-in-depth” approach to protect personal data.

“This means several levels of protection are built into the system, so even if one layer is compromised, others continue to safeguard the data,” the ministry stated.

“The entire system is regularly reviewed and audited to ensure it remains secure,” it added.

To prevent misuse or interception, Aadhaar data is protected using advanced encryption technologies, both when it is being transmitted and when it is stored.

The Aadhaar system has been declared a protected system, which brings it under the continuous watch of the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC).

The agency regularly provides security advisories to strengthen UIDAI’s cybersecurity posture.

The Ministry of Communications said the app — designed to protect citizens from cyber fraud and telecom-related crimes — has been gaining strong acceptance, making a compulsory installation rule unnecessary.

“So far, 1.4 crore users have downloaded Sanchar Saathi, helping report nearly 2,000 fraud incidents every day,” the ministry said.

“In the last 24 hours alone, six lakh citizens registered to download the app, marking a tenfold jump in its uptake,” it added.

The government said the mandate was originally intended to ensure that less-aware citizens also had access to cybersecurity tools.

But with the recent spike in voluntary adoption, the rule has now been rolled back.

“Given Sanchar Saathi’s increasing acceptance, the Government has decided not to make the pre-installation mandatory for mobile manufacturers,” the Centre said.

The ministry emphasised that the app is secure, carries no surveillance feature and serves only one purpose — protecting users from fraudsters and helping them report cyber wrongdoing.

It added that people are free to delete the app whenever they want, and that it supports “jan bhagidari” by enabling citizens to participate in fighting cybercrime.

The announcement came hours after Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia strongly refuted snooping allegations in Parliament.

Addressing the Lok Sabha during Question Hour, he said the app cannot monitor users and remains inactive unless someone chooses to register.

“Snooping is neither possible nor will it happen with the Sanchar Saathi safety app,” Scindia said, adding in Hindi, “Sanchar Saathi app se na snooping sambhav hai, na snooping hoga.”

He underlined that the app is meant only to help people protect themselves from digital threats such as fake mobile connections, fraud calls and lost or stolen phones.

All players providing app-based communication services in India have been asked to submit compliance reports to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) within 120 days from issue of the directions.

The department warned that failure to comply with norms will attract action under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, and other applicable laws.

The directive would impact how users access services of messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Arattai, Snapchat, Sharechat, Jiochat, Josh, in India.

The Centre’s latest directive means that these messaging services would only work if the SIM is present and active in the user’s device.

Issuing the direction on November 28, the telecom department said it has come to the notice of the central government that some of the app-based communication services that are utilising mobile number for identification of its customers/users or for provisioning or delivery of services, allows users to consume their services without availability of the underlying SIM within the device in which the said platform or app is running.

“…and this feature is posing challenge to telecom cyber security as it is being misused from outside the country to commit cyber-frauds,” it said.

The DoT asserted it has become necessary to issue directions to providers of app-based communication services to prevent the misuse of telecommunication identifiers and to “safeguard the integrity and security of the telecom ecosystem”.

“The Department of Telecommunications, in exercise of the powers conferred upon it under the Rules, hereby directs TIUEs (Telecommunication Identifier User Entity) providing App Based Communication Services utilising mobile number for identification of customers/users or for provisioning or delivery of services in India, to…from 90 days of issue of these instructions, ensure that the App based Communication Services is continuously linked to the SIM card (associated with Mobile Number used for identification of customers/users or for provisioning or delivery of services) installed in the device, making it impossible to use the app without that specific, active SIM,” the directive said.

Within 90 days, any web version of the app must automatically log users out at least once every six hours. Users can then sign in again by re-linking the device using a QR code.

“From 90 days of issue of these instructions, ensure that the web service instance of the Mobile App, if provided, shall be logged out periodically (not later than 6 hours) and allow the facility to the user to re-link the device using QR code,” it added.

The directions come into force immediately and will remain in force until amended or withdrawn by the DoT, it added.
