The passing of Abdul Ahad Farhad, the celebrated broadcaster, writer, poet, and cultural custodian, has cast a deep shadow of grief across Kashmir’s literary and intellectual circles. His demise is not merely the loss of an individual but the silencing of a voice that for decades echoed cultural, and ethical ethos of the Valley.

Farhad’s life was a rare blend of artistic excellence, spiritual depth, and unwavering commitment to preserving Kashmir’s rich Sufi and Rishi traditions. Though Abdul Ahad Farhad has departed from this transient world, his legacy remains firmly rooted in the collective memory of the people. His contributions to broadcasting and literature, particularly in promoting spiritual harmony and cultural awareness, will continue to guide and inspire generations. Endowed by the Almighty with a uniquely soulful and resonant voice, Farhad possessed the rare ability to touch hearts and awaken minds, making his presence instantly recognizable and deeply cherished. Farhad began his professional journey in journalism, serving as editor with the newspaper Daily Walur. This early phase of his career sharpened his intellectual discipline and refined his command over language. His exceptional talent soon found a wider platform when, in 1972, he was selected as an Intermediate Script Writer at Radio Kashmir. This marked the beginning of a long and illustrious association with broadcasting, a medium through which his voice and vision would reach countless homes. A truly multidimensional personality, Farhad’s role at Radio Kashmir evolved far beyond scriptwriting.

He distinguished himself as a news reader, broadcaster, author, and translator, performing each role with remarkable sincerity and professionalism. His scripts were known for their clarity, intellectual depth, and cultural authenticity, while his broadcasts carried a rare warmth that forged an intimate bond with listeners. Through radio, he became a trusted voice—one that educated, inspired, and spiritually uplifted the audience. Beyond broadcasting, Abdul Ahad Farhad was deeply engaged with Kashmir’s literary world. He remained associated with several literary platforms and actively participated in cultural forums.

He hosted programs that promoted literature and encouraged young and emerging writers, offering them guidance and a platform to express their creativity. His humility, openness, and encouragement earned him widespread respect among fellow writers, scholars, and cultural activists. The poetic spirit within Farhad revealed itself early in life. He began composing poetry during his school days, gradually developing a voice rooted in devotion, reflection, and moral consciousness. His verses reflected spiritual sincerity rather than mere artistic display, making them deeply relatable and enduring.

Farhad’s creative engagement was not confined to radio and print alone. He also made a significant contribution to Doordarshan Kashmir (DD Kashmir), where he anchored and presented several renowned programs. His calm demeanor, dignified presentation, and intellectual clarity made him a natural communicator on television as well.

Additionally, he traveled extensively across Jammu and Kashmir, producing feature films on the Sufi saints of Kashmir, highlighting their teachings of love, tolerance, and spiritual coexistence. Through these visual narratives, he played a vital role in preserving and disseminating Kashmir’s spiritual heritage.

Even after retirement, Abdul Ahad Farhad remained unwavering in his mission. Refusing to withdraw from public engagement, he embraced new media and launched his own YouTube channel, Bazmi Irfan. Through this platform, he sought to introduce contemporary Sufi saints and spiritual thinkers.

Born in Soura, Srinagar, Farhad remained deeply connected to his roots, carrying the fragrance of Kashmiri culture wherever he went. His passing has created an irreplaceable vacuum in Kashmir’s literary and cultural landscape. He will forever be remembered as a custodian of Kashmir’s soul—a voice that spoke with sincerity, wisdom, and devotion, and a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
