Excerpts
Q: When you heard your name being called at the IPL auction, what was your first reaction?
It felt good. There was hope that someone would take me. I was expecting a chance, but honestly, I did not expect it to go this big. For me, it was about getting an opportunity. Once someone takes you, then you can go inside and do your job.
Q: Do you see the IPL as a launching pad towards the Indian team?
Obviously. This is the biggest stage for any cricketer. If you do well here, I think you can be fast-tracked into the Indian team. There is no bigger platform than this.
Q: The IPL is often seen as very different from domestic cricket. How do you view that transition?
The domestic level in India is also very high. If you are doing well in domestic cricket, you won’t face many problems in the IPL. Yes, there are international players here, but domestic cricket is very competitive, so adjusting to the IPL should not be very difficult.
Q: You are also being referred as an all-rounder. How do you see that identity?
I work a lot on my batting as well. I haven’t done it consistently yet, but I have contributed with the bat and even won matches. In the future, you will see that I will score runs as well.
Q: With the Vijay Hazare Trophy coming up, what is your focus now?
We will try to do well there too, like we did in Ranji Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. First, the aim is to qualify and then to try and win.
Q: Your journey hasn’t been easy. There were rejections and auctions where you went unsold. How did you deal with that phase?
If you want to play at the highest level, you don’t think too much about results. Your job is to perform; selection is not in your hands. I just kept doing my job and waited for the right time.
Q: Was there ever a moment when the rejection felt heartbreaking?
I don’t believe in such things. I believe you get what you deserve at the right time. Thinking too much about selection only ruins your game.
Q: Many young cricketers today chase shortcuts and social media attention. What would your message be to them?
My message is simple: work hard every day, set a goal and work towards it. Learn from failures, get up again and keep moving forward with motivation.
Q: You were among the leading wicket-takers as a pacer in the last Ranji season. Did you ever feel you deserved an IPL call earlier?
I have said this before, selection is not in your hands. Why think about things you can’t control? Just give your best and leave the rest to Allah. You will get what you need.
Q: Finally, one line to sum up how you are feeling right now?
I am very excited to play the IPL and show my skills to the world.
