Srinagar, Dec 29: Amid intensified security checks along the strategic Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, police and allied agencies on Monday conducted a comprehensive review of security and safety arrangements at the Navyug Tunnel, a key all-weather link between the Kashmir Valley and Jammu.

The review meeting was chaired by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kulgam, Anayat Ali Chowdhary, and focused on evaluating existing security measures, traffic regulation and emergency preparedness at the tunnel, officials said.

The meeting was attended by the Commanding Officer of the 163 Battalion of the CRPF, the Additional Superintendent of Police (National Highway) Qazigund, Sub-Divisional Police Officers of Qazigund and Banihal, representatives of the National Highways Authority of India, officials of Qazigund Expressway Private Limited, and other officers associated with tunnel operations.

According to officials, the SSP directed all agencies to enhance inter-agency coordination, ensure round-the-clock surveillance and enforce strict access control in view of the prevailing security situation along the highway. Emphasis was laid on maintaining a robust and coordinated emergency response mechanism to deal with any untoward situation.

Recent road accidents inside and around the tunnel were also reviewed, with officials expressing concern over overspeeding.

Commuters were urged to strictly follow the prescribed speed limit of 50 kmph inside the tunnel, which authorities described as critical for preventing accidents and ensuring safe passage.

The SSP stressed strict adherence to standard operating procedures, contingency preparedness and effective communication among all agencies deployed at the tunnel. He directed officers to remain alert at all times and respond swiftly to emergencies related to security, traffic congestion or medical assistance.

The review comes at a time when security agencies have stepped up frisking, vehicle checking and monitoring along the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway as part of broader measures to safeguard vital infrastructure and ensure public safety.

Officials said the tunnel’s security apparatus had already been strengthened earlier this year with the deployment of advanced surveillance systems, including wall radar and thermal screening technology, to enhance monitoring and threat detection.

Police said all concerned agencies have been asked to maintain heightened vigilance and work in close coordination, underlining that continuous surveillance and proactive measures are essential to ensure smooth and safe movement along the crucial highway corridor.
