Kargil, Dec 26: Ladakh continued to reel under intense cold, with night temperatures plunging much lower than those recorded in Kashmir, as cold wave conditions persisted across the region.
“Cold wave conditions persist in parts of Ladakh, where minimum temperatures remain well below freezing,” officials of the Meteorological Department (MeT) said.
The Ladakh region continues to witness severe cold wave conditions marked by deep-freezing temperatures.
According to the MeT, Drass recorded a bone-chilling minimum temperature of minus 14.8 degrees Celsius.
Nyoma registered minus 12.8 degrees Celsius, while Leh recorded a low of minus 9.8 degrees Celsius.
Kargil also experienced severe cold, with the mercury dipping to minus 9.3 degrees Celsius.
The ongoing cold wave has had a significant impact on daily life in the region, with residents facing extreme weather conditions as temperatures remain far below the freezing point.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department, Ladakh, forecasts snowfall by the end of the year.
As per the MeT Ladakh, partly cloudy weather is expected from December 27 to December 29.
However, light to moderate snow is likely at scattered places in the Kargil and Zanskar regions and over the higher reaches of Leh district from December 30 to December 31.
The department has also warned of chances of heavy snowfall, up to one foot, along the Zojila-Minamarg axis during the same period.
Despite the extreme cold conditions, the Srinagar-Leh National Highway remains open for traffic.
Officials said vehicular movement is being allowed as per the issued traffic advisory.
