Ramban, Jan 4: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way traffic on Sunday.

Traffic authorities said that, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply from both directions on Monday.

Officials said that LMVs and heavy vehicles were permitted to move throughout Sunday in both directions.

However, traffic movement remained slow at several locations due to single-lane stretches and vehicle breakdowns.

Congestion was reported at Balinalla, Dewal, Nashri-Dalwas, and along the Marog-Kishtwari Pather stretch.

The situation worsened temporarily after the breakdown of a few heavy vehicles, leading to delays.

Authorities advised the commuters to check the latest traffic updates from Traffic Control Units (TCUs) at Srinagar, Ramban, and Jammu, and follow official advisories issued through the social media platforms of the J&K Traffic Police before starting their journey.

Passengers were urged to prefer daytime travel and avoid night journeys, particularly on vulnerable sections of the highway.

Officials cautioned that the movement of heavy vehicles between the Nashri and Navyug tunnels during night hours could cause inconvenience and further congestion.

Drivers were advised to maintain lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong-lane driving could result in traffic jams and pose serious safety hazards.

Meanwhile, the Kishtwar-Sinthan Top-Anantnag National Highway remained closed due to heavy snowfall and accumulation of snow along the route.

Authorities said restoration work would begin once weather conditions improve.

Ramban Jan 4: Reasi Police took swift action at Panthal after a violent altercation was reported during routine patrolling by a police party from Police Station Katra on Sunday.

According to officials, while on patrol near Panthal, police personnel noticed a group of individuals, residing in jhuggis, armed with sticks and engaged in violence. The police immediately intervened and brought the situation under control, thereby averting any untoward incident.

During verification, it was found that the individuals involved were from outside the state and were residing at the location as tenants. Further inquiry revealed that the landowner, Ajay Singh, son of Shankar Singh, resident of Ward No 12, Arli Hansali Road, Katra, had failed to submit mandatory tenant details to the police.

Police said that the landowner had violated the order issued by the SDM Katra on November 11, 2025, which mandated all house owners and landlords to furnish complete tenant particulars to the police.

Accordingly, FIR No 02/2025 under Section 223(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against the landowner, and further investigation is underway.

The operation was carried out by SHO Police Station Katra, Inspector Ranjeet Singh Rao, under the close supervision of SDPO Katra Dr Bhishm Dubey and SP Katra Vipan Chandran.

Meanwhile, SSP Reasi Paramvir Singh has once again appealed to all house owners and landlords to strictly comply with tenant verification orders in the interest of public safety and maintenance of law and order. He warned that non-compliance would invite strict legal action as per law.

Ramban, Jan 2: At least half a dozen residential houses comprising multiple families were gutted late Thursday evening in Thachna village of the remote Dachan area in Kishtwar district of Chenab Valley, while two persons sustained minor injuries during firefighting operations.

Officials said the fire erupted in one of the houses in the densely populated village and quickly spread to nearby residential structures.

Locals immediately alerted the authorities, following which local volunteers, teams from the Police, and Army rushed to the spot and initiated rescue and fire control operations.

Fire tenders later reached the area, though by then the blaze had already caused extensive damage to several houses.

No loss of life was reported.

The fire was eventually brought under control through the joint efforts of local volunteers, Police, SDRF, Fire Services, and Army personnel.

Several families have been rendered homeless in the harsh winter conditions as multiple residential structures were completely destroyed.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and is under investigation, officials said.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kishtwar, Pankaj Sharma, along with other senior officers, monitored the firefighting and relief operations.

Notably, the Dachan area is located around 50 km from the district headquarters, often posing challenges for timely emergency response.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh, in a post on X, said he had spoken to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) regarding the incident and confirmed that no loss of life had occurred.

He said that the district administration and the Red Cross had mobilised relief material and that financial assistance was being arranged for the affected families.

Medalist Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed concern over the incident and directed the district administration to ensure immediate relief, assess losses, and provide necessary assistance to those affected.

Member of Parliament from the National Conference, Sajjad Kichloo, expressed grief over the incident and said he had spoken to the Chief Minister to ensure prompt assistance.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Tariq Hamid Karra urged the district and J&K administration to provide immediate relief to the victims amid the severe winter conditions.

Meanwhile, Kishtwar MLA Shagun Parihar expressed deep anguish over the devastating fire in Thachna village and called for adequate compensation and rehabilitation for the affected families.

Ramban, Jan 1: Senior Superintendent of Police Arun Gupta on Thursday reviewed the performance of Ramban Police for 2025, highlighting major achievements in maintaining peace and security in the district while outlining key priorities and a roadmap for policing in 2026.

Addressing a press conference, SSP Gupta stated that the Ramban Police, in close coordination with the Army, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), central intelligence agencies, and various wings of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, implemented robust security and law enforcement measures throughout the year. He stressed that preventive policing; intelligence-led operations, effective field supervision and sustained community outreach remained the core focus areas.

Action against Anti-National Elements

The SSP said stringent action was taken against anti-national elements and their support networks. One released militant was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA), while continuous surveillance was maintained on surrendered militants, over ground workers (OGWs) and their associates. Properties measuring 41 kanals and 14 marlas, worth approximately 1.52 crore, were attached, and preventive action was initiated against 84 OGWs.

Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants

As part of verification and deportation drives, 32 illegal foreign nationals of Rohingya and Bangladeshi origin were identified. In this connection, FIR No. 77/2025 was registered at Police Station Chanderkote.

Hotel Regulation Compliance

To ensure compliance with mandatory legal provisions, FIR No. 65/2025 was registered against Hotel Pine Heritage, Patnitop, for failing to submit Form-C. Sensitisation programmes were also conducted for hoteliers and NGOs to enhance awareness about hotel regulations.

Law & Order and Communal Harmony

Smooth Conduct of Major Events

Elaborate security arrangements ensured the peaceful conduct of major events, including Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations, the 38-day-long Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2025, local religious yatras, winter carnivals at Sanasar and Patnitop, multiple VVIP movements and Operation Sindhoor deployments. Security audits of NH-44, hydel projects and rail infrastructure were also carried out.

Crime Review 2025

Sharing crime statistics, the SSP said that 789 cases were registered during the year, of which 725 were disposed of, achieving a disposal rate of 91.88 per cent for current-year cases. Including previous pendency, a total of 989 cases were handled, with 825 cases disposed of, resulting in an overall disposal rate of 83.41 per cent.

Action Against Drug Trafficking

Under the anti-drug drive, 25 cases under the NDPS Act were registered and 32 accused arrested. Police recovered poppy straw, charas, heroin and codeine syrup. Four drug peddlers were detained under the PIT-NDPS, and drug-related property worth 13.64 lakh was attached. Awareness programmes were conducted in 143 panchayats and 107 schools.

Bovine Smuggling and Other Crimes

Police registered 249 cases of bovine smuggling, seized 234 vehicles, rescued 2,817 animals and arrested 265 persons. Action was also initiated for the suspension of driving licences and vehicle registrations of repeat offenders. On the road safety front, the district recorded a 10 per cent decline in road accidents compared to 2024, attributed to strict enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act and sustained awareness drives.

Disaster Response

During cloudburst incidents in April and August 2025, Ramban Police actively assisted in rescue and evacuation operations, regulated traffic on NH-44, helped stranded commuters and coordinated with the civil administration and SDRF to ensure smooth movement despite adverse weather conditions.

Officials cautioned that the movement of heavy vehicles between the Nashri and Navyug tunnels during night hours could cause inconvenience and delays.

Drivers were urged to maintain lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong-lane driving could lead to traffic jams and pose serious safety risks.

Meanwhile, Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) work resumed in the Battery Cheshma-Digdol area amid regulated traffic on Saturday.
